A Good Long Life
Paul Lanzikos, Executive Director, North Shore Elder Services
Living a long life in relatively good health is an aspiration for virtually everyone. While chance definitely plays a role in how long we live and in what condition, there are two factors that are much more influential: genetic history and lifestyle.
The New England Centenarian Study being conducted by the Boston University School of Medicine, has documented that a strong genetic tendency for longevity will not prevail against an unhealthy lifestyle. There is nothing we can do about the DNA we inherit, but how well we live our lives is very much under our control.
Activities such as smoking and excessive drinking of alcoholic beverages are obvious behaviors that have a deleterious effect on both longevity and well-being. What we eat - and how much - as well as our level and frequency of physical exercise can have as much impact on our health.
No matter how we have been living our lives and treating - or mistreating - ourselves, it is never too late to start living healthier. Research has shown that people well into their 80's can benefit by a newly engaged exercise program, changes in dietary intake, and cessation of smoking and heavy drinking. However, the best way to ensure well-lived later years is to take steps during middle-age or earlier. Check out our Get Healthy: Live Longer sidebar for some resources.
Many more Americans are living into their 80's, 90's, and even 100's. I hope that you will be counted among and that you will be well enough to fully enjoy those years. As Pogo says, "We have met the enemy and they is us!" Don't be an enemy to yourself. Eat well and stay active.
Editors Note: Thank you for noticing - we have been working out! You should join us at NSES for PowerPump Tuesdays and Yoga Fridays. Contact Nancy, our very own personal trainer, to find out how.
