Information: Advocacy at North Shore Elder Services takes several forms. We provide information to individuals so they can advocate for themselves or family members. In some of our programs, we work on behalf of clients and others to secure resources, provide protection, and empower individuals. On a broader scale, we engage with public policy makers, including elected officials, at the local, state and federal levels regarding legislation, regulations and funding affecting elders, adults with disabilities and their families. Issue: Previously people with Medicaid in need of long-term care had only one option— a nursing facility. The Equal Choice Bill gives seniors and adults with disabilities who qualify for long-term care services paid by Medicaid the choice of care at home or in a nursing facility.
Action: North Shore Elder Services mobilized with multiple visits to the state house as well as scores of phone calls and e-mails to government officials requesting support and action on this landmark civil rights bill. Result: Each member of the state legislature representing North Shore communities endorsed The Equal Choice Bill, which was signed into law on August 4th, 2006.
