Mike Ruane Mike Ruane - an elder advocate without a peer

In recent years, the notion of public service has not been held in high regard. All too often, someone who seeks elected office does so to have a stepping- stone to a yet higher position. Rare is the individual who sets out to serve and does so without regard to self-interest or promotion.

    J. Michael Ruane was just such a rare person. Mike Ruane recently died after a long and valiant struggle with cancer. At his wake and funeral, he was honored by literally thousands who cherished his strongly held values and appreciated his dogged advocacy on behalf of elders in general and the citizens of Salem in particular.

Mike Ruane was first elected to the House of Representatives in 1975 and was re-elected fourteen times, serving 30 years and holding the record for the most consecutive years as a state representative.

Mike championed many causes on behalf of elders. In the House Ways and Means Committee, he ensured funding for home care services and local senior centers. More than ten years ago, he saw the need for congregate housing. Through his efforts North Shore Elder Services now operates congregate housing in both Salem and Peabody in partnership with the local housing authorities. To recognize Mike's key role, the congregate house in Salem next to the senior center is named in his honor.

Another program in which Representative Ruane had a strong personal commitment is the Money Management Program, which is today a statewide undertaking in partnership with AARP, the Executive Office of Elder Affairs, and Mass Home Care. He is widely known as the "Father of Money Management in Massachusetts".

Representative Mike Ruane was a unique legislator. There was no more vigilant advocate for "my seniors", as he was fond of saying, than he. At North Shore Elder Services, as a living legacy for Mike, we pledge to maintain an unwavering commitment to the well being of elders and their families in Salem and throughout the North Shore.

Money Management Event Money Management Volunteers Recognized
    -Kimberly Whitmore, Community Services Manager

Economic security is essential for each of us, said Charles Desmond, President of AARP Massachusetts at a statewide Money Management volunteer appreciation event held at the State House on June 28, 2006. Several Money Management staff and volunteers from NSES attended including program manager Sally Zavarella who spoke proudly of the volunteers, "Our money management volunteers recognize that economic security leads to financial independence and the ability to make choices in how and where an elder wishes to live. These volunteers do such a great job helping these folks who need it most."

State Representative Joyce Spiliotis, a long time champion of the Money Management Program, spoke of her district, Thirty two percent of my district is over the age of sixty. Spiliotis went on to say she works closely with North Shore Elder Services, speaking warmly of the work money management volunteers have done to help her constituents.

Since the inception of the program in 1991, over 6200 elders have been assisted in Massachusetts, said Gregory Giuliano, Director of Protective Services for the Executive Office of Elder Affairs. We are the largest program in the nation and one of only two that serve elders statewide. Currently, 1200 elders in the Commonwealth are being served. One of 25 sites across the Commonwealth, NSES assists over 50 elders with more than 60 volunteers.

If you know someone over the age of 60 who needs short or long-term assistance with managing their finances our trusted volunteers can help, just give us a call at 978-750-4540 to make a referral.

Lobster Graphic Help us bring "Summer in New England" to over 1,000 elders

In early spring elders were asked by our Nutrition Department what would be on their 'wish list' for the summer. Lobster rolls and ice cream sundaes were right there at the top. We couldn't argue, because what is summer in New England without lobster and ice cream?

As part of our 2006 fundraiser, "Hazy Crazy Summer Days," we are hosting several fundraisers in hopes that we can grant our elders wishes. You and your community members can help by taking part in our Lobster Roll Sale, Thursday, July 13th. Lobster rolls can be purchased at these two locations:

Lobster Rolls will be value priced, call us for the day's market rate. Free delivery is available for large orders, simply by calling our Lobster Hotline at 978- 624-2295.

Proceeds will support the delivery of 1,100 lobster rolls (over 100 pounds of lobster meat!) to home delivered meal recipients and congregate housing residents in Danvers, Marblehead, Middleton, Peabody and Salem during the month of July.
