    Paul & Luisa

Last week NSES staff and volunteers (Paul Lanzikos, NSES executive director and Luisa Baez, NSES summer intern are pictured here) pitched in to prepare over 800 lobster rolls as a special "Summer in New England" meal for congregate meals participants and home delivered meal recipients. A big thank you goes out to everyone who helped -we couldn't have done it without you.

Now we are gearing up for the final event in our Hazy Crazy Summer Days- Ice Cream Sundae delivery to our clients who receive home delivered meals. Volunteers are needed to make ice cream deliveries around the North Shore. What could make your summer better than a smile on an elder's face when you shake up the whipped cream and plunk a cherry on top of a sundae at their doorstep.

If you would like to volunteer please contact Susan Boeri at 978-750-4540.

    Paul J. Lanzikos, Executive Director

Seniors citizens and the disabled who qualify for long term care services under MassHealth will now have an "equal choice" of care at home or care in a nursing facility under legislation unanimously passed by both the Massachusetts House of Representatives and Senate and scheduled to be signed by Governor Romney on August 4th.

This law is an important civil rights protection that allows consumers to seek care in their homes and in community care programs. It also establishes a "pre-admission counseling" program to ensure people are aware of community alternatives before they finalize a care decision.

According to the Romney Administration, the equal choice statute will save state taxpayers $134 million the first five years after implementation. Today, approximately 75% of the MassHealth funding for long-term care goes to nursing facilities. Massachusetts ranks only 25th in the nation for the percentage of MassHealth funding spent for home and community.

Peggy Munro, the Chair of the Program and Advocacy Committee at North Shore Elder Services noted, "Elder and disabled persons want to be cared for at home as a first option. This legislation gives them the choice to live independently in the community. This law is a win-win. It keeps people living in their own homes in the community where they want to be and it saves tax dollars as well."

Every member of the state legislature representing North Shore communities had endorsed the bill. We thank them for their active and effective leadership on this issue. Our gratitude to also extended to the scores of North Shore elder care advocates who made telephone calls and sent emails in support of the legislation.

To learn more about "Equal Choice" and how it may effect the long term care you or a family can receive, please contact North Shore Elder Services Information Services Department at 978 750 4540 or nselder@nselder.org.

Calvin Berger Poster NSES Takes Center Stage in Gloucester

With so many children and grandchildren to be proud of, sometimes the refrigerator door at NSES looks more like it belongs in a family kitchen than an office. So when our family caregiver specialist, Janice Wyner proudly posted a flyer about her son's national award-winning musical "Calvin Berger" being produced at the Gloucester Stage Company we just had to buy up a bunch of tickets and spread the news.

This witty and hip musical resets the much beloved tale of Cyrano de Bergerac in an American high school. Our hero of insecurity, Calvin Berger, communicates with the girl of his dreams through a handsome classmate.

NSES is hosting a performance followed by a reception with playwright Barry Wyner, castmembers and crew. Proceeds will benefit the Family Caregiver Program. Please join us for the world premiere of Barry Wyner's musical Calvin Berger, winner of the prestigious Jerry Bock Award for Outstanding Achievement for Musical Theatre, 2005-2006 -a delight for all ages.

    Sitting Yoga C'mon Get Happy!

In the midst of practice, any yoga teacher may instruct you to turn the corners of your mouth up, a pose anyone can master. But now there are entire yoga practices built on this idea of smiling and laughter. North Shore Elder Services invites you to join us August 9th for "Laughter in the Work Place" a TIMELY TOPICS program presentation by Dot McKeen, Laughter Yoga Leader.

Discover Laughter (Hasya) Yoga by joining a group of "giggling gurus" to experience unconditional group laughter techniques based on ancient yoga practice. This combined with deep breathing and neck and shoulder stretching exercises help remove stiffness and pain resulting from stress and a sedentary lifestyle.

Laughter helps to reduce inhibitions, increase self- confidence and creates a healthy attitude. Laughter is therapeutic and is one of the easiest types of meditation which promotes instant relaxation.A daily laughter exercise increases oxygen levels in the body and releases endorphins from the brain cells and promotes an overall sense of well-being.

Come join the fun and laugh away your stress! Join Dot McKeen, RYT and Certified Laughter Leader in this joyful healing experience.
