All too frequently in organizations such as ours - a community-based, mission-driven, not-for-profit agency - the most under-appreciated group is the board of directors. Yet, they, both as a group and as individuals, are indispensable to any successful undertaking at North Shore Elder Services whether it is the daily routine of service delivery or a once-a- year special event.

This year four remarkable and dedicated individuals are ending their board service. We salute each one and extend our most heartfelt appreciation. They include:

The coming of autumn signals a bittersweet time at North Shore Elder Services regarding the board of directors. It is now, at the occasion of our annual meeting, that we say, "So long and thank you very much" - but not "good-bye" - to some directors who end their service due to term limits. As they depart, we welcome on new stewards to the public trust that has been afforded us by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Look to the Shoreline next month when we announce our new board members.

Prescription Advantage, the state's pharmacy assistance program is offering open enrollment from September 15th through November 15th. For many Massachusetts seniors, this program will help lower prescription drug costs and protect them from the Medicare Part D "donut hole."

Prescription Advantage requires no monthly premium while wrapping arround to help cover co-pays, deductibles and other coverage gaps. Individuals with limited income may also be eligible to recieve help paying for their Medicare Part D premiumns. Individuals who are not eligible for medicare can still apply for Prescription Advantage.

For seniors who do not have Medicare Part D, but have prescription drug coverage through an employer or union, Prescription Advantage also provides secondary benefits. If an elder has not enrolled in a Medicare Part D plan, they are encouage to still apply for Prescription Advantage and joing a Part D plan later in the year.

Join us at our "Share and Care Coffee Café"

Recently the Salem News shed light on one of the North Shore's growing, hidden populations, in it's story: "Grandparents raising grandkids is booming trend." Too often caregivers in this position may shy away from support because they feel stigmatized, overwhelmed or alone. We at North Shore Elder Services understand that though the face of "family" may be changing, the fundamental concept isn't.

We praise grandparents out there who have made it their mission to see that a child is cared for. We know that it is not without challenge.

27, 915 grandparents raising grandchildren in Massachusetts is a significant number of people facing a critical crossroads. 12,046 of these folks reside in Essex County and a stunning 3,009 of them have to role of a primary caregiver to a child under 18. North Shore Elder Services hopes to connect these people to resources as well as each other.

Please join our caregiver specialists and other grandparents (and great-grandparents!) raising grandchildren on November 3rd at 9:00am for "Share and Care Coffee Café," an informational and supportive get together at our office at 152 Sylvan Street in Danvers. Please call 978-750-4540 to register or with any questions concerning resources for elders and caregivers.
