GoodSearch LogoDo you Google or are you more the Yahoo! type? Now there is a way to put your money where your search is. GoodSearch.compowered by Yahoo donates a penny- per-search to the non-profit of your choice. Simply log on to GoodSearch.com and where it asks in the middle of the page "Who do you GoodSearch for?" type in North Shore Elder Services. You need only do this the first time and now every search you do earns us a penny. And believe us, those pennies add up.

Under our name you can click right on "Amount Raised" to track our progress. Beneath that information you will see a chart that extrapolates the idea that if we could get 1,000 users searching twice a day we could raise $7,300 dollars a year just with a few clicks of a mouse. Setting GoodSearch.com as your homepage can help you to remember to use it regularly. Help us to spread the word and make this a good year with GoodSearch.

NSESLogoA New Year, A New Website

-Paul Lanzikos, Executive Director

A new year often brings new beginnings. So it is at North Shore Elder Services with our website, www.nselder.org.

During the past few months a talented task group composed of NSES staff members and several dedicated volunteers have worked diligently on total re-design of our website. Our goal was to create a site that provides accurate, useful, and current information and is easy to navigate. Please visit our site and let us know how well we did and what suggestions you have to enhance it. There is a feedback link on the site.

Here some features of our new website:

  • Font sizes may be enlarged for those with vision impairments.
  • Text can be translated into 8 languages including Spanish, French, and Portuguese with more to come.
  • Frequently asked questions page is organized by consumer topic.
  • Most pages are divided into three sections: Information (general description of the topic); Support (quick access to staff members); and Solutions (details about specific programs and services).
  • There is an extensive list of current links to useful websites.
  • An archive page lists back issues of our newsletters.
  • The "Ways to Help" page provides volunteer and donation information.

While we are pleased with the improvements made to our website - and we hope you are also - the most important resource that we have available is our trained and dedicated staff of social workers, nurses, program managers, and support personnel. For elders and their family members in the year ahead, we are committed to realize the promise of our agency's motto - Life. Made easier. Please call on us throughout the year for information and assistance.

Pam, Kimberly & JoanneJoin our volunteer family!

-Pamela S. Finer, Community Resource Developer

Pamela Finer, (left) is welcomed by Community Services Manager Kimberly Whitmore (center) and Joanne Hogan (right), former volunteer coordinator, now Nursing Home Ombudsman Assistant Manager. Pam has joined NSES as our new Community Resource Developer, specializing in outreaching to volunteers and community resources.

Why not get the New Year off to a great start by volunteering for the benefit of those served through North Shore Elder Services. We offer a wide variety of services and programs to meet elder care needs and to assist elders in living independently in their homes. Volunteers are an integral part of the assistance we give in our service area. NSES volunteers complete the circle of support to elders adding a personal touch that is always appreciated.

Volunteers in our Friendly Visitor program bring companionship into the day of a homebound elder by visiting or taking them food shopping. Transportation to medical appointments is another very important need and a good match for volunteers who prefer a less structured schedule.

There are times when remaining independent is jeopardized because an elder develops vision problems or becomes overwhelmed by the paperwork involved in managing household finances. Our Money Manager volunteers are matched with a client and scheduled to visit once or twice monthly to write checks and balance the checkbook. Looking for a regular one-on-one volunteer opportunity on a schedule you set, check out our Money Manager program.

Our Ombudsman, or Nursing Home Resident Representative program volunteers are assigned a nursing home after completing a comprehensive 3- day training. The volunteer then serves as an advocate for residents living in a long-term care facility, to assure that residents live with dignity and respect and their voice is always heard.

These are just a few of the ways that your valuable time can be utilized to support elders and to make our communities stronger through your caring involvement. I welcome the opportunity to talk with you about these and other volunteer roles at NSES. You may reach me directly at 978-624-2288 from 9-2, Monday through Friday. I look forward to your call.

Property Tax Credit Helps Elders Save Hundreds

-Al Norman, Executive Director, Mass Home Care

If you are age 65 or older, you may be eligible for a state "refundable credit" to help pay for your local property taxes. This credit, known as the "circuit breaker," could save you up to $870 when you file your state income taxes for 2006 this spring-even if you owe no state taxes.

If you file for the $870 credit before April 15th, 2007, you can also claim up to an $840 credit for 2005, $820 for 2004, and $810 for 2003. That's a total of $3,340 in credits if a person has never used the circuit breaker before.

Look to next month's Shoreline for workshops on the circuit breaker tax credit sponsored by North Shore Elder Services.

Medicare D Workshops Get The Word Out

- Kimberly Whitmore, Community Services Manager

North Shore Elder Services welcomed elder law attorney Patrick Curley back to the agency to reprise the informational sessions held last year when Medicare Part D was first launched. Many people called to ask if we would do the sessions again. Two sessions, open to the public, were held on December 13th and 14th.

Attorney Curley went over Medicare Part D plans in detail as well as addressing some of the issues the program faced in the first year. One audience member asked Attorney Curley why the plan is not set up so insurance plans can purchase medications in bulk, like the Veterans Administration does, which cuts the cost of medications significantly. Curley explained that the law was written for each insurance plan to purchase medication independently. He then encouraged people to contact "your elected leaders to ask that Medicare can negotiate as an industry."

For further information on Medicare Part D please contact the Information Services Department at 978- 750-4540.
