NSESLogo Successfully Surviving SIMS                          -Paul J. Lanzikos

Two of the hallmarks of the staff at North Shore Elder Services are caring attitudes and professional competence.  These qualities were well demonstrated during the last few months as NSES made a computer software transition to "Senior Information Management System" or SIMS.  Our former system, HOMIS, hadn't been updated since the mid-90's.

The implementation of SIMS has created major changes in the way case management is conducted. Staff will be able to update and access client records from their laptops on- site in our clients' home via a confidential and secure internet portal.  With so much change, it would have been entirely understandable to hear a lot of moaning and grumbling. Not a complaint or a whine was heard!

Instead staff rolled up their sleeves and put their full effort into the transition process.  While there are still kinks in the system, and people are in a learning mode, we have definitely made it successfully through the toughest part of the conversion.

Caregiver & Adult with Alzheimer'sStaff Complete Alzheimer's Disease Training
-Gwen Kopka, Program Director

Twenty-five NSES staff recently completed a comprehensive Alzheimer's Disease Certificate Program. Participants included Case Managers, Nurses, Family Caregiver Specialists, Housing Coordinators, Protective Service Clinicians and Nursing Home Ombudsman Coordinators.

This 12-hour training program was presented by certified Alzheimer's trainers Darcy Adams, LICSW, who is the Director of Community Programs for Northeast Senior Health and Beth Desrocher, RN, of  NSPRN, who is a consultant for Spectrum Adult Day Health at the Cummings Center.

As they said, "we would not put up with a generalized cancer diagnosis, so why do we put up with a generalized dementia diagnosis?"  Read more...

Danvers Senior Center offers free "File of Life"

Visit the Danvers Senior Center on February 15th for lunch with a little live music from the Maple Sugar Jazz Band and sign up for a free "File of Life."  Lunch will be served at 11:45 a.m. Seniors can also pose for a photo on their new ID cards while they fill out their File of Life cards up until 2:30 p.m.

The File of Life details a person's name, emergency contacts, health status, medications, allergies and  doctor's contact information.  This information is placed in a magnetic sleeve to be kept on the refrigerator, so it is always handy.

Seniors are encouraged to bring medical information and a list of medications with them.  Volunteers will be on hand to help out.  Luncheon will include ziti with meat sauce or Siesta fish ($2 suggested donation). Please RSVP for the lunch by 10:00 a.m. the day before  to the Danvers Senior Center at 978-762-0208.
