| Volunteers Needed |
| The Inspired Gift is looking for volunteers who would like to "mind the store" a few times a week Monday-Friday 2:00-5:00 p.m. An easy-going way to "stay busy" for a retiree.
The training course for new SHINE volunteers will begin in late April. Trained SHINE volunteers help elders resolve questions about Medicare, supplemental health insurance, prescription drug plans and Medicare Advantage plans. Volunteers will be provided with ten courses that run twice a week from 10 AM to 3 PM. Although the original time commitment for the training course is significant, SHINE volunteers find their efforts very gratifying when they are able to help elders clarify and resolve such important matters.
To find out more about these and other volunteer opportunities, please contact Pam at pfiner@nselder.org or give her a call at 978-750-4540 ext 288. | |

Passages
Thirty years ago a young author wrote a popular guidebook to help people through an important stage of their lives. Gail Sheehy, in her bestseller, Passages, helped provide understanding to the mystery of living through "middle-age" for a generation who mistrusted anyone over the age of thirty. However, she gave sparse attention to the situation of anyone more than sixty years old.
Today, many would say life is just beginning when you are in your thirties and it is not until even later decades of life that a person becomes fully developed.
At North Shore Elder Services, we subscribe to this understanding of a person's - or an organization's - stages of development and life experience. The first thirty years are prologue.
During our first three decades of service to North Shore older adults and their families, we have accomplished much. Tens of thousands of lives have been "made easier", as our agency's motto indicates. Cost-effective, quality services have been delivered including personal care, meals-on-wheels, respite for family caregivers, and responses to reports of elder abuse and neglect. Innovative programs such as Money Management, congregate housing, supportive living, and elder care advisor have been launched.
All this work and achievements notwithstanding, as we look ahead the challenges are more demanding, the need ever growing, and the necessity for innovation more essential.
As we mark the thirtieth year of service, the Board, Staff, and Volunteers at North Shore Elder Services are recommitting to the vital mission of assisting to meet the daily needs of frail and disabled older adults and their families.
We ask for your help in this effort in several ways. Share the experience with North Shore Elder Services of yours or a member of your family (see how in the Birthday Card sidebar). Give us your ideas how we can make our services better or suggest a program or initiative we could start. Make a contribution of your time or money to help us further our mission. Celebrate with us at The Thirtieth Birthday Bash on Saturday, May 5th at the Torigian Community Life Center in Peabody.
At North Shore Elder Services, we believe the best years are ahead for us as an organization and for the elders and their families we serve. However, this vision will not be realized without much effort and commitment on the part of many individuals. We invite you to join us on this passage.
