Then &
Now
Forty-four
years ago, our second youngest president - John F. Kennedy -
became the first to proclaim May as "Senior Citizens Month"
which we now know as "Older Americans Month". He asked that
Americans of all ages take a few moments to reflect on the
contributions of this generation to all of society as well as
what in return we collectively owed to them.
Forty-four
years by most measures is not a long time. Yet it is striking to
consider how far our nation has come in this short period
improving the conditions that most older people
experience. Back
then most retired persons lacked health insurance and found
access to basic health care challenging at best. Today, virtually
all elders have at least the benefit of Medicare coverage and
many, with lower incomes, also of Medicaid.
In
the 1960's more than one of three elders lived in abject
poverty with the basics of housing, nutrition, and safety
often in jeopardy if not altogether absent. Today, ten percent of
older persons have incomes at or below the poverty line. While this number
still is too high, many programs and services are in place to
help mitigate the impact of poverty including subsidized
housing, meal programs, and Medicaid. It is a sad
irony to note that the poverty rate today among American
children living in urban and rural communities - is one out of
three. This is
not the type of generational equity that we seek.

Countdown to the Bash
We can't believe it is almost here --and you
had better have your tickets-- because the Back to the 70's
Birthday Bash is SOLD OUT. Rumor is, even our board
members have started selling their own tickets on E-bay!
The evening will begin with a cocktail hour in the
"What's Your Sign? Lounge" sponsored by Henry's
Market from 6:30-7:30. Guests will nosh on 70's
favorites like sweet & sour meatballs, California dip
(pictured above in a retro Lipton ad) and anything else we can
stick a toothpick in.
Release your inner disco queen at the Boogie
Down Stage sponsored by Associated Home Care as
Horizon kicks off with live music at 7:30.
We are encouraging our funky
friends to add a little seventies style to their
attire, whether that means digging out your polyester
bell bottoms or sliding your feet into your new platforms
(that look exactly like the ones you wore in high school) and
we know you have a mood ring somewhere.
Parking is available, although carpooling is
encouraged. Please drive around to the side entrance
of the Peabody Council on Aging/Torigian Community Life
Center at 75 Central Street. All names will be held
at the door, no paper ticket is needed. North Shore
Elder Services thanks all our sponsors and guests for helping
us have a Groovy Time for a Great Cause.
