The Geometry of Aging
Have you ever heard of the "geometry of aging"? The concept is quite simple, yet it has major implications for American society as more than 60 million baby boomers approach their retirement years.
Consider a triangle: ê. That's how the American population looked just one hundred years ago.At the widest base on the bottom were the youngsters. At the narrowest point on the top were the very old. The rest of the population comprised a gradually sloping middle.
Today, the geometry of aging has radically transformed. A diagram of the population today looks very much like a rectangle:0. This difference is more than pictorial. It portends some very serious public policy issues.
In 1900, only one out of every twenty Americans was over the age of 65 and almost half of the population was age 21 or younger (48.3%). By the time much of the Baby Boomer Generation is in retirement in 2030, the percentage of older adults in the population will equal the proportion of younger persons, about 20% each. This means a very large number of retirees will be supported by a smaller group of workers. Just two employed persons paying taxes will be supporting each Social Security pensioner compared to more than twenty workers to each retiree when Social Security first started in the United States in 1935.
Last month, more than 100 people gathered at North Shore Community College (NSCC) to engage a wide-ranging discussion of the impeding "demographic age wave" and its potential impact on the way of life on the North Shore. The event, entitled, Aging: A 2020 Vision for the Greater North Shore, was sponsored by NSCC's Public Policy Institute and Beverly State Representative Mary Grant. The expectation is that this forum is the first of a series on these pressing issues. We will keep you posted in future editions of The Shoreline as the sessions are scheduled.
For more information about some current and future trends affecting the North Shore and the metropolitan Boston region, see the Metropolitan Area Planning Council's MetroFuture Report and the economic report, On the Edge Facing a Challenging and Uncertain Future, produced by The Gerontology Institute and the John W. McCormick Graduate School of Policy Studies at the University of Massachusetts at Boston.

And The Award Goes To
It's bigger than the Oscars, it's better than the Emmys, and it's grander then the Grammys -it's the 2007 MetLife Foundation's Older Volunteers Enrich America Award and it is bestowed upon our own Money Management Volunteer, Jerry Stepner (shown here, left, with AARP Massachusetts President Dr. Charles Desmond.)
In conjunction with the National Association of Area Agencies on Aging (N4A), the Team Spirit Category honors older volunteers who assist other older adults. Jerry certainly fits the bill, as one of the pioneering volunteers in the Money Management Program with sixteen years of service to his credit at both the local and state level!
Jerry will be presented with this prestigious award in Washington DC this weekend. All of us at NSES join together in congratulating Jerry Stepner on this well- deserved national recognition. |

Spreading the Word about NSES
"The best portions of a good person's life are the little, nameless, unremembered acts of kindness and love." Because this sentiment of William Wordsworth is such a universal truth, we chose it to grace our handsome new memorial Tribute Cards. A second card, featuring the words "The days that make us happy make us wise" is appropriate for acknowledging a variety of special occasions.
NSES will mail an elegant Tribute Card to the individual or family of your request, inscribed with your name and message, upon receipt of your send-to instructions and donation (minimum of $10 per card). The donation amount is always kept confidential and does not appear on the card.
We also offer a Take Home Package of five Tribute Cards (for a $25 donation) which you'll find convenient to keep on hand for mailing out to friends and family as special occasions arise.
NSES Tribute Cards provide a memorable way of recognizing life's milestones or offering condolences while supporting our vital agency services and programs. To make a memorial or tribute donation, or order a supply of Tribute Cards please contact 978-624-2220 or giving@nselder.org.

| Tarnia's Story |
|
-Lynda Viola
Tarnia was a resident of Marblehead who lived alone in her own home. Devoted to her career as a flight attendant, she enjoyed her single life, never married or had children.
A few months prior to her sixtieth birthday she was diagnosed with Lou Gehrig's Disease. Having lived on her own without close relatives in the area for many years, Tarnia, like many people, believed she could face this stage of her life all on her own.
