Just like summer blossoms, good deeds are busting out all over. During the past month, North Shore Elder Services volunteers have taken up the call to help others.

Twenty military personnel from Hanscom Air Force base answered our "Call for Troops" to help make life easier for the women who live at Brookhouse Home in Salem. They gave up an entire Saturday to paint inside and outside, and the place is shining.

More than a dozen volunteers delivered 522 Lobster Rolls from Gloucester to Malden, from Lawrence to Lynn and all places in between to raise funds for our annual Hazy Crazy Summer Days activities. The seafood packed rolls generously prepared by Henry's Market in North Beverly were a big hit.

Also during June one of our long time volunteers, JerryStepner, was honored in Washington, DC with the "N4a / Metlife Volunteers Enrich America Award." Jerry was an original Money Management program volunteer and has helped countless elders over the past 17 years. The future of the Money Management program looks bright as ever with more than 50 AARP members responding to a recent request to join the program.

We hope that you have a blooming good summer. We welcome your participation in making it the same for hundreds of NSES clients during our Hazy Crazy Summer Activities. Join us in August when we delivery over 450 Homemade ice cream to frail elders. You'll be happy you did.

SOUND
BITES:
NSES welcomed Mayor Kim Driscoll as a guest of the Power Breakfast -a conversation over coffee with those who shape our community.

· Paul's been a savior in many ways regarding the new senior center initiative.

· We don't have as many seniors using the facility as we should. And the money's been tough, we've had obstacles.

· The goal is multi-dimensional, a community life center for seniors but also from 4-8pm it's not locked up tight like our grandmother's parlor.

· 200 centraly located parking spaces just doesn't exist in downtown Salem.

· We are spending a lot of time, evey site is being looked at.  To have a facility that treats people they way they deserve to be treated, that's our goal.

Lobster Roll Wrap-Up

Thank you to everyone who purchased a lobster roll as part of Hazy, Crazy Summer Days. With your help the nutrition program raised over $2,500! These funds will be used to subsidize special "New England Summer" lobster roll lunches for over 1,000 meals-on-wheels and community dining participants on July 18th. Henry's Market has even volunteered to provide the lobster salad at a reduced cost.

Volunteers Needed- On a summer night there is nothing better to hear after dinner than the words "let's go out for ice cream!"  The next time you are in line at your favorite ice cream counter mulling over fudge ripple versus mint chocolate chip take the opportunity to ask a friend or family member to sign up with you to deliver an ice cream sundae to a home-bound elder with NSES.
  • Ask your employer to send out an email to staff interested in donating delivery time on their lunch hour
  • Looking for a fun way to expose your kids to helping others in one afternoon
  • Great for a group of teens in need of community service for college applications
All you have to do is contact us and ask to be put on our ice cream delivery list.  NSES will coordinate delivery assignments with volunteers as we get closer to the dates August 13-17th.  50-80 volunteers are needed so sign up now: volunteer@nselder.org

 Portugese FlagPortuguese Outreach a Success

North Shore Elder Service's Family Caregiver Program in collaboration with Grace Martins, owner of Martins Senior Homecare, sponsored a Portuguese Family Caregiver Conference in early June. The goal of the conference was to reach caregivers in the Portuguese community with pertinent information, resources and options designed to alleviate caregiver stress and burnout.

The symposium took place at the beautifully refurbished Portuguese Club, Irmandade do Espirito Santo, on Howley Street in Peabody. Nearly forty Portuguese-speaking caregivers attended this event. Participants were treated to brunch including traditional Portuguese Sweet Bread. The panel of professionals conducted the training entirely in Portuguese and all resources were available in Portuguese.

Grace Martins, Elizabeth Chavez, of North Shore Community Action Program, Margarida Mendonca, of the Peabody Council on Aging, and Kathy Perrella from North Shore Elder Services were some of the conference professionals who provided valuable information to the group.
