Ice Cream ConeIn This Issue

So it's summertime and we've got ice cream on the brain!  Did you know that after a busy week, our staff are known to throw impromptu ice cream parties at 3:00 on Fridays?  This may give you reason to join us. Paul talks about bringing ice cream to home-bound elders and invites you to be a part of Hazy Crazy Summer Days. Check out our Ice Cream Shop Sponsors who help make this happen by donating everything from ice cream to cherries.  And don't forget to take a chance on our Red Sox Raffle this year.  Thanks again for visiting the Shoreline.

Helado.  Creme de gelo. Мороженое.  Ice cream.

Our clients all have a different name for it.  But, no matter the language, they all call it "a summer treat."

We, at North Shore Elder Services, appreciate that oftentimes it's the small things - like an ice cream sundae on a hot August day - that make a difference for many elders.

For the second year in a row we are celebrating Hazy Crazy Summer Days, bringing something special into the routine days of hundreds of homebound older adults.  Earlier in July, our meals-on-wheels recipients and participants at our community dining sites enjoyed a special lobster roll lunch.  A thousand rolls were served!

August 13-17th a small army of volunteers will fan out to the homes of meals on wheels clients in Danvers, Marblehead, Middleton, Peabody, and Salem.  Each pair of volunteers will be delivering five or six sundaes complete with home-made vanilla ice cream, hot fudge or strawberry sauce, whipped cream and cherries!

Mullen Advertising in Wenham is encouraging their employees to volunteer a  lunch hour or two that week helping out.  So far 50 employees have signed up!

We encourage you to help make an August afternoon special for an elder who can't easily get out to enjoy a summer ice cream treat.  If you have a relative or a neighbor who is homebound, surprise them with a homemade sundae, or stop in at one of our Ice Cream Shop Sponsors.  It will make two people very happy - the recipient and you!

BITES:
Our staff give feedback on their favorite frozen treats

· The classic Hot Fudge Sundae is the way to go for Dick Hylan and Susan Boeri.  Marcel Devoe, prefers going all the way with a Banana Split!

· We need our coffee -even in our ice cream so it's Mocha Almond for Gwen Kopka and Mocha Chip for Janeth Cassidy &  Mary Ellen Abodeely.

· Looking to leave early on a Friday? Tempt Paul Lanzikos with a dish of Grapenut ice cream.

·
Chocolate lovers Sarah Holden, Maggie Driscoll and Karen Rongitsch dig in for Moose Tracks, Chocolate Walnut Fudge & Heath Bar Crunch.

·  A cool dish of Lemon Sorbet please for Eleanor Goldberg & Kimberly Whitmore.

Here's the scoop -now all we need is you

On a summer night there is nothing better to hear after dinner than the words "let's go out for ice cream!"  The next time you are in line at your favorite ice cream counter mulling over fudge ripple versus mint chocolate chip take the opportunity to ask a friend or family member to sign up with you to deliver an ice cream sundae to a home-bound elder with NSES.
  • Ask your employer to send out an email to staff interested in donating delivery time on their lunch hour
  • A fun way to encourage your kids to help others
  • Great for a group of teens in need of community service for college applications
All you have to do is contact us and ask to be put on our ice cream delivery list.  NSES will coordinate delivery assignments with volunteers as we get closer to the dates August 13-17th.  60-80 volunteers are needed so sign up now: volunteer@nselder.org
