Hold the presses

We have had a healthy dose of late-breaking new here at North Shore Elder Services in the last few weeks. We hope you enjoy this edition of the Shoreline, chock full of exciting announcements.

We invite you to mark your calendar for the first conference from the ADRC of the Greater North Shore "Living Life Easier" and our 2007 Annual Meeting with Guest Speaker, Robin Young, of NPR's Here and Now. In this you will also find the recap of our Power Breakfast with Peabody Mayor Mike Bonfanti and a rundown of our Red Sox Raffle Winners.

Perhaps your day started with reading the newspaper -printed in a small font. At lunch you visited your favorite deli and didn't give a second thought coming up the two concrete steps to the door. On the way home from work, you'll pick up a few bags of groceries and load them into your car.

All in all a routine day, routine that is if you have no limitations to perform these tasks of daily living. Life in modern America is full of all sorts of overlooked obstacles, many of which, with forethought and ingenuity, can be minimized or eliminated altogether.

On the North Shore for the last two years, several aging service and disability advocacy agencies, including North Shore Elder Services, have worked together and formed the Aging and Disability Resource Consortium of the Greater North Shore (ADRC). The purpose of the ADRC is to create a single, coordinated system of information and access for all persons seeking long term services and supports, regardless of age, disability or income.

For those of us who have a disability with our mobility, vision, hearing, or thought process, daily tasks are often far from routine in their accomplishment. No matter what the cause or extent, everyone with a disability wants to function with independence, dignity, and have access to everything 21st Century society has to offer.

On September 28th, the ADRC will sponsor a conference, exploring the methods  available to individuals and communities in making the daily lives of everyone - with and without disabilities - easier and equitable in terms of function and access. See below for more information on joining us.
