Looking Ahead to 2008
-Paul J. Lanzikos
In Ancient China there was a saying: "May you live in interesting times." Sometimes the most difficult times are the most interesting and the most rewarding. They challenge us, they test us, and occasionally they can even bring out the best in us.
Today, there are 79,000 Americans age 100 or older - a considerable increase from 9,000 at the beginning of the 20th century, but a far cry from the 834,000 expected in 2050 when today's Baby Boomers become centenarians. Americans are turning 65 years old at a rate of more than 7,000 a day!
A hundred years ago, acute disease - mostly infectious types - were the leading causes of death for older adults. Today, chronic conditions account for eight of the top reasons for deaths of elders. Back then, most seniors either lived in the same households as younger family or very nearby. Today, it is not unusual for adult children to be living in communities far from their aging parents. These and other factors have significantly influenced the response to the needs of an aging population.

Avon cosmetics and American Doll Clothing are two popular favorties and this season we are offering Mee Lee's gourmet goodies and a unique gift idea from Dream Dinners of Danvers.
The Artisan Faire is an annual fundraising event held at North Shore Elder Services gift shop, the Inspired Gift that is open year-round. Visit us to find boutique-style gifts at a price that can't be beat. |
