The Promise of Spring
-Paul J. Lanzikos
Spring is the season of renewal and opportunity. Spring is also the time we plan for the year ahead. We cultivate the ground and, full of expectation and hope, plant seeds of innovation that we anticipate will grow into mature, productive programs.
Recently, I met with aging service professionals and advocates from across the country. We compared notes, shared details of new projects, and discussed how to obtain the necessary funding to support current and future programming. The one point we all agreed upon there will be no easy, one-size-meets-all-needs solutions for the coming baby boomers. Moreover, there was concurrence that most innovation was occurring at the grassroots level. Additionally, there was agreement that we should not expect major new sources of funding from the federal government for aging service programming even though the growth of America's older adult population will be exploding as Baby Boomers become Medicare recipients and Social Security beneficiaries.
What does this mean for local aging service agencies such as North Shore Elder Services? Quite simply, we must renew our commitment to address the needs of older adults and their families in the least restrictive, most cost-effective manner possible. We must anticipate that we will be asked to do more service for more people in more ways without proportionately more funding. Rather than being disheartened by this challenge, we must rise to the call and become increasingly innovative with our programs and more individualized in approach to client work.
Please help bring the promise of spring to older adults, especially frail elders who most fervent desire is to live the remainder of their lives at home, in safety and comfort, with their dignity and independence respected. May 3rd we will be "Sailing the Seven Seas" at the Danversport Yacht Club. While an enjoyable evening is definitely an objective, the more important aim is to raise some significant financial support for our community programs. I hope you will read more below about joining us for this special evening. |

Last year our band of 70's experts helped to make our Birthday Bash an unforgettable blast from the past, down to the lava lamps and beaded curtains. This year our team of "cruise directors" have put together a traveling checklist to help you remember everything you will need to enjoy the voyage:
1. An extra pair of dancing shoes, because we have booked the biggest-big-band-sound in town. The Beantown Swing Orchestra will be proving that it don't mean a thing if it ain't got that swing. Listen to some of their tracks here.
2. A belt with a few extra notches, to help make room for delicious dining delights from around the globe. From latin-inspired tidbits as we head south to Asian-fusion appetizers as we head east and some Greek goodies when we circle back west.
3. Your sunglasses and a big hat- to help you remain incognito as you keep you eye on anyone trying to out-bid you at the silent auction. Look for a preview list of our auction items in your email in-box the Monday before the event.
4. Your camera -to capture the other fun surprises we have cooked up! Let's just say the captain of the ship is a real character. |
